Voices of Exile Ring Out Half a Century After Chile’s Coup

This week marks 50 years since Chile’s military overthrew democratically elected President Salvador Allende. Newly released documents reveal that President Nixon’s White House supported the coup and the subsequent dictatorship of General Pinochet. Thousands were killed or disappeared, and hundreds of thousands went into exile, many seeking refuge in the United States, where they continued to denounce the dictatorship’s abuses.
