High Hopes for Guatemalan President-Elect Bernardo Arévalo

Bernardo Arévalo, of the anti-corruption Semilla party, triumphed over conservative Sandra Torres at the polls and will become Guatemala’s next president in January. Although his victory was recognized by the outgoing president and several heads of state in the region, right-wing sectors continue to press to disqualify his candidacy. However, Arevalo and his supporters have high hopes of consolidating the historic victory and charting a progressive direction in the impoverished Central American country. Maria Martin reports from Guatemala City.
