In Budget Talks, Republican Lawmakers Take Aim at Asylum

As a condition of unlocking the aid package for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan, Republican lawmakers seek to toughen requirements for asylum seekers. They also propose limiting temporary permits that are granted for humanitarian reasons. Some Democrats have called the proposal cruel and inhumane. While progressive lawmakers, activists, and lawyers are closing ranks to derail the conservative offensive, some moderates appear willing to vote with the Republicans.
