Contrary to Claims, California Still a Global Power, and Latinos its Pillar

After the Republican National Convention, leaders of the conservative right have focused their attacks on California, claiming that a once wealthy, innovative and clean state has become a burden and a sanctuary for dirty and lawless people—adjectives they have used to describe Latinos. To clarify the facts, Samuel Orozco spoke with the renowned UCLA historian Dr. David Hayes-Bautista. The researcher maintains that, despite recent calamities, California continues to be the fifth largest economic power in the world and a major contributor to the national public treasury, largely due to the contribution of Latino workers.
