Despite the fact that California has laws against employers who do not pay minimum wage, provide overtime pay, or fulfill other workplace rights, the problem continues. Affected workers are ending up on the streets. To combat homelessness, two council members are proposing new measures against wage theft that are welcomed by workers, including one man who spent more than a decade trying to recover his wages. Alejando Maciel spoke with him and brings us this story from Los Angeles.

Voices of Exile Ring Out Half a Century After Chile’s Coup - This week marks 50 years since Chile’s military overthrew democratically elected President Salvador Allende. Newly released documents reveal that President Nixon’s White House supported the coup and the subsequent dictatorship of General Pinochet. Thousands were killed or disappeared, and hundreds of thousands went into exile, many seeking refuge in the United States, where they continued to denounce the dictatorship’s abuses.
