Ancestral Songs and Stories Alive in Rio Arriba – Communities in the Rio Grande del Norte area are keeping alive the centuries-old language, customs and beliefs from the time when Spaniards founded Santa Fe, the oldest U.S. state capital, in the region between New Mexico and Colorado. The mestizo and centenarian culture is still alive and present today in the songs and legends handed down by elders in the region. In this special report, which is part of the series, “Raíces: Songs and Stories of Río Arriba,” folk musicians and experts talk about the unique elements of the traditional songs of Deep New Mexico. Rubén Tapia prepared this report.
