Young People Around the World Protest Global Warming – After testifying before Congress, prominent 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg traveled to New York to lead an international mobilization on Friday, September 20th and Monday the 23rd to demand that governments and corporations take urgent action to stop global warming. It is estimated that more than one million young students will participate in cities such as Washington D.C., New York, Miami, Seattle and Los Angeles. Thousands of actions are also expected in more than 150 countries in one of the largest environmental protests in history. More details next week.

California Approves Controversial Pioneering Law to Regulate Gig Economy – This week, the governor of California signed a law that will turn hundreds of thousands of independent contractors into employees with labor rights. With this law, California becomes a key state in modifying the gig economy. However, some workers oppose the changes, and companies are preparing to challenge the law through a referendum next year. Crab Industry Relies on Temporary Mexican Workers – For 25 years and for eight months, hundreds of Mexican women have been working on crab farms in the state of Maryland. They are hired legally thanks to the H-2B program for temporary non-farm workers. Since last year, however, employers have been in a state of uncertainty, unsure of how many visas the federal government will approve, and Congress has failed to take action. As local residents reject the tedious work, the multi-million-dollar industry relies on these migrant workers. Jose López Zamorano reports from Maryland.
