The Year’s News in Review – In this special holiday edition, we offer a summary of the year’s news, with segments from some of the stories we covered in 2017. At the start of the year, President Trump assumed office under the banner of “America First,” promising walls and protectionism at all costs. The following day, more than half a million turned out for the Women’s March on Washington, joined by millions more around the world. President Trump later put a dramatic end to the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program for undocumented youth and took steps to remove Temporary Protected Status for refugees from Central America and the Caribbean. While Trump was unable to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, he did sign into law a tax reform bill, which brings the most ambitious tax cuts since the Reagan era. In a possible harbinger of electoral battles in 2018, candidates aligned with Trump suffered stunning defeats in state and special elections toward the end of the year, while Latino leaders achieved victories with progressive social reform agendas. Rubén Tapia prepared this summary of the year’s highlights.
